Ion Exchange in talks for S African buy
Amit Tripathi (Wednesday, September 24, 2008 03:34 IST)

The acquisition will be followed by JVs.

JOHANNESBURG: Ion Exchange India, a Mumbai-based water treatment solutions firm, is in talks with at least three South African firms with similar capabilities for acquisition. Through the buy, the company hopes to provide water-treatment services to hydro-power generation firms and other utilities.

“We are evaluating companies in South Africa for an acquisition. The buyout will be followed by joint ventures with a couple of large water-treatment firms,” an official said, requesting anonymity.

The firms that Ion Exchange is in talks with have a topline of Rs 40-100 crore. Ion Exchange offers water management solutions for industry, homes and communities. It is eyeing global expansion.

Rajesh Sharma, managing director, had told DNA Money in 2007 that it was planning a wholly-owned subsidiary in the US. “We want to be one of the major global players with a leadership position in Southeast Asia,” he had said. The company then set up a 100% subsidiary to service the East and Southeast Asian markets.

The global water treatment industry is pegged at $50 billion, with the domestic industry being worth $1.5 billion.
